You can make a clean, usable logo with AI for free in about an hour. The trick is to let AI generate ideas, then finish the logo yourself so it's simple, readable and actually yours. This guide shows how to make a logo with AI for free using ChatGPT for concepts and Canva for the final design, plus the trademark and copyright points most tutorials skip.
What makes a good logo (before you touch AI)
AI can produce hundreds of pretty images. Very few of them work as logos. A logo has a different job: it has to be recognized in a split second, at the size of an app icon, in one color, on any background.
Keep these rules in mind and you'll filter AI output fast:
- Simple: one idea, few shapes. If you can't describe it in five words, it's too busy.
- Scalable: still clear at 32 pixels wide.
- Works in one color: black on white and white on black.
- Readable name: the text must be crisp and correctly spelled.
- Distinctive: it shouldn't look like a famous brand's mark.
Step 1: Write a 5-line brand brief
AI gives better results when you know what you want. Answer five questions in a note:
- Name: exactly as it should appear.
- What you do and for whom: one sentence.
- Personality: three adjectives (for example: calm, modern, trustworthy).
- Colors: 1–2 main colors, ideally with hex codes.
- Avoid: clichés in your niche (lightbulbs for "ideas", dollar signs for finance).
Step 2: Generate logo concepts with ChatGPT
ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation, according to OpenAI's pricing page, which is enough for a few rounds of concepts. Use a prompt that asks for a logo, not an illustration:
Create a minimalist logo symbol for a brand called [name], a [what you do]
for [audience]. Personality: [3 adjectives]. Style: flat vector,
simple geometric shapes, bold clean lines, 2 colors ([color 1], [color 2])
on a plain white background. No text, no gradients, no shadows,
no tiny details. Centered, with plenty of empty space around it.
Why "no text"? Image generators can misspell or distort letters. It's safer to generate the symbol only and add your name later in a real font.
Generate 3 or 4 rounds, changing one thing each time: the shape idea, the style ("monoline", "negative space", "badge"), or the colors. Save the best 5 concepts. If you want sharper results from every request, read our guide on how to write ChatGPT prompts.
Tip: ask ChatGPT for ideas in words first: "Give me 10 simple symbol ideas for [brand] that avoid clichés." Then turn the best 2–3 ideas into image prompts.
Step 3: Pick the strongest concept
Shrink each concept to thumbnail size on your screen and squint. The one you can still recognize is usually the winner. Then check it against the rules above: simple, one color, distinctive.
Show your top two to a few people in your target audience and ask one question: "What kind of business do you think this is?" Their answer tells you whether the logo says what you want.
Step 4: Finish the logo in Canva
Canva has a free logo maker. Canva's own steps are simple: open Canva and search for "Logo" to start a design. Then build your logo in this order:
- Start from a blank logo design (rather than a template, for the trademark reason in Step 7).
- Upload your chosen AI symbol and place it.
- Add your brand name with a clean, readable font. Try 3 or 4 fonts side by side and pick the clearest.
- Set your exact colors using hex codes.
- Adjust spacing: give the symbol and name breathing room, and align them carefully.
Canva also has its own AI image generator for quick variations. On the free plan, Canva's pricing page lists up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, so use them for targeted tweaks rather than random rerolls.
Step 5: Create the versions you'll actually need
One logo file isn't enough. Make these versions in the same Canva design (one page each):
| Version | Where you'll use it |
|---|---|
| Full color, horizontal (symbol + name side by side) | Website header, email signature |
| Full color, stacked (symbol above name) | Social posts, flyers |
| Symbol only, square | Profile pictures, app icon, favicon |
| One-color white | Dark backgrounds, video watermark |
| One-color black | Documents, printing, stamps |
Canva's logo page notes you can save your logo as a PNG, JPEG or PDF.
Step 6: Make it sharp at any size (optional)
PNG files are made of pixels, so they blur when enlarged. For signs, merchandise or printing, you'll want a vector file (SVG or PDF) that scales without losing quality.
A free route is Inkscape, a free vector design tool, which has a tutorial on tracing bitmaps into vector shapes. Trace your symbol, clean up any wobbly edges, and keep the vector file as your master copy. Simple, flat logos trace much more cleanly than detailed ones, which is another reason to keep the design simple.
Step 7: Check trademark and copyright before you commit
This is where many free logos get into trouble later.
Canva templates and trademarks
Canva's Content License Agreement lists, among prohibited uses, using any of its Content "as part of a trade-mark, design-mark, trade-name, business name or service mark (excluding fonts)". That's why Step 4 starts from a blank design with your own uploaded symbol. If you build a logo from Canva's stock elements or templates, read that agreement before you rely on the logo as a trademark.
AI-generated images and copyright
In January 2025 the US Copyright Office concluded that generative AI outputs can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements, and that "the mere provision of prompts" isn't enough. Creative modification or arrangement by a human can count. In practice, redrawing, simplifying and combining the AI concept with your own typography and layout makes the final logo more your own work. For a business you plan to grow, talking to a trademark lawyer is worth it.
Search for similar marks
Before you print anything, search for similar logos and names in your industry. The USPTO's trademark basics page explains why searching for similar trademarks matters before you file, and the USPTO offers an online trademark search.
Step 8: Test it in the real world
Put the logo on a mockup of everything you'll use it for: your YouTube profile picture, a social post, a business card, a website header. Check it:
- at tiny sizes (favicon, profile picture),
- on light and dark backgrounds,
- in black and white only.
If anything fails, simplify. Removing a detail almost always helps.
FAQ
Can I make a logo with AI for free?
Yes. ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation for concepts, and Canva's free plan includes a logo maker and a limited number of AI uses for finishing it. Free vector tools like Inkscape can turn your final symbol into a scalable file.
Why does AI mess up the text in my logo?
Image generators can misspell or distort letters. Generate the symbol without text, then add your brand name in a real font in Canva. The text will be crisp and correct.
Can I trademark a logo made with AI?
It depends on your country and how the logo was made. Canva's license doesn't allow its Content to be used as part of a trademark (fonts excepted), and the US Copyright Office says purely AI-generated output isn't protected without enough human authorship. Making the final design your own and getting legal advice are the safe path.
What file formats does a logo need?
At minimum, PNG for web and social, and a vector file (SVG or PDF) for print and large sizes. Keep full-color, one-color white and one-color black versions.
How many colors should a logo have?
Most strong logos use one or two colors. Fewer colors make the logo easier to recognize and cheaper to print, and it must still work in a single color.
Conclusion
The best free AI logo workflow is: write a brief, generate simple concepts with ChatGPT, pick the clearest one, finish it in Canva with your own typography, make the key versions, and check trademarks before you commit. AI speeds up the ideas; your choices make it a logo.
